Dr Simon Ramsden studied medicine first at Oxford University, obtaining a degree in physiology in 1981. He then did his clinical studies and St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1984 with Honours in pathology and pharmacology. He won two scholarships at St Mary’s and the ICI prize in pharmacology.
He then trained in general medicine at St Mary’s achieving membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1987. Dr Ramsden at this stage decided not to pursue a career in cardiology but did paediatric training and re-trained in general practice. In 1998 he passed the Royal College of General Practitioners membership exams with honours. In the 1990s he was a senior lecturer in general practice at the Royal Free School of Medicine and also taught communication skills to undergraduates.
He became a partner at the Pembridge Villas practice where he still works, now as Senior Partner. The practice has grown from about 2,000 patients to over 10,000 and is very well thought of by its patients and local residents. He has worked extensively with the local health authorities and has been clinical lead in cardiology and diabetes.
Dr Ramsden is married with two teenage boys. Outside medicine he is a keen tennis player and angler.
